Floral Update: Importance of Advocacy

March 26, 2025

I have been reflecting on the incredible success of The Floral Conference 2025, which brought together a record number of retailers, industry leaders, and floral professionals for an unforgettable day of networking, education, and innovation. This year’s event was a true milestone, reinforcing the strength and growth of our floral community.

It was my first conference as Director of Floral, and I could not have asked for a more inspiring and engaging experience. Seeing so many passionate professionals come together to exchange ideas and elevate the industry was both energizing and affirming. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of our valued members and partners. Your support, participation, and commitment to excellence continue to drive our industry forward.

As we work together to strengthen and expand the floral market, advocacy remains a critical component. Last week I attended the Society of American Florists Congressional Action Days in Washington, D.C., where industry members and I heard from Joe Bischoff, and had a chance to meet with lawmakers to discuss key floral-related issues. Some of our topics included:

  • Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Re-Certification This program has not been renewed since 2020, and we are advocating for its reinstatement to support floral imports.
  • Maintaining Current Funding for the Floriculture Nursery Research Initiative (FNRI) Ensuring continued investment in research and innovation for our industry.
  • Labor and H-2A Program Support Addressing the importance of reliable labor to sustain floral production.
  • Protecting USDA Appropriations – Ensuring efficient inspection processes for floral imports, particularly in Miami, to maintain product quality and availability.

In addition to policy discussions, I am committed to ongoing conversations with our members and exhibitors about key industry concerns, including sustainability, tariffs, labor, and global market trends. Your insights and experiences help shape our approach and advocacy efforts.

I look forward to hearing how the Easter holiday goes for you in the coming weeks! And as always, please feel free to continue to reach out to me with your thoughts, concerns, and questions. Your voice is vital in shaping the future of the floral industry. Together, we can continue to inspire consumers, drive growth, and ensure flowers remain an integral part of everyday life.
