Washington, DC -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jaye L. Hamby as the director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). As Director, Dr. Hamby will lead USDA’s efforts to advance agricultural innovation, community outreach, and foster the next generation of agricultural leaders.

“The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) congratulates Dr. Jaye L. Hamby on his appointment as Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Dr. Hamby's expertise in agriculture, along with his strong commitment to research, innovation, and workforce development, will be instrumental in advancing USDA’s mission to support American agriculture,” said Max Teplitski, Chief Science Officer at IFPA.

“NIFA plays a critical role in funding and guiding programs that strengthen the fresh produce industry. Investments in the Specialty Crops Research Initiative (SCRI) drive advancements in production efficiency, sustainability, and pest and disease management. Additionally, NIFA’s support for plant breeding, food safety, small business research innovation, and workforce development is essential to ensuring the long-term competitiveness of U.S. agriculture. These programs help equip growers with cutting-edge technologies, enhance food safety standards, and cultivate the next generation of agricultural professionals.

“We look forward to working with Dr. Hamby and the NIFA team to continue fostering innovation and ensuring a vibrant future for specialty crops and the entire fresh produce supply chain.”
